Description

This outstanding piece of Delaware County history, a covered wagon chest, rode on Michael Gross’ covered wagon when he brought his family from Pennsylvania to Troy Township, Delaware County, Ohio in 1821.  It is to be viewed at the Pioneer Bed Chamber in the Meeker Homestead Museum.

This chest was one of two long chests that were on each side of the covered wagon.  In the chests were feather beds that were taken out and placed on top of chests for the children as beds.

Michael was a shoemaker. Michael and wife Elizabeth (Bricker) Gross had nine (9) children: Susan, Hiram, Isaiah Jacob, Sarah, Amelia, Catherine Matilda, Mary Elizabeth, Harriett, and Margaret.  Isaiah Jacob’s granddaughter, Mrs. Iva Miller, donated the chest to the Historical society in 1966.
