About The Old Jail Tour:
Step inside history and join Delaware County Historical Society volunteers, Brent Carson and Dave Hejmanowski, as they take visitors on guided tours of this iconic historic jail which housed prisoners from 1878 to 1988.
Visitors will be guided in groups through part of the first floor of the Sheriff’s Residence, currently used as the county law library, and into the Jail / cellblock portion of the building, where you will have time to experience the confined space that in later years held dozens of prisoners. You will hear stories about the jail, jailers and prisoners;and learn about the prison reform movement of the mid to late 1800s. During this time in history, the sheriff’s family lived in a fine home, and was definitely close to work!
The sheriff’s residence portion of the building is primarily Italianate architectural style, with some Gothic Revival and Second Empire details. The jail’s cellblock at the rear has vestigial embattlements on the top of its walls suggesting a fortress.
This could be your last chance to see this historic Delaware treasure.
