Exec Dir of the Hayes Presidential Library and Museums- Rutherford B. Hayes during the Civil War
Rutherford Hayes witnessed the Civil War first hand and wrote prolifically about it. Through lively and heartbreaking letters and diary entries, this presentation will share the war experience through Rutherford’s eyes: the near misses, the camaraderie among the soldiers, and why he thought the Union generals weren’t aggressive enough. His wife Lucy also observed the war from the front lines, while making every effort to ensure her far flung family members still felt connected. Though he had no military training, Rutherford rose through the ranks to end the war as a general and Lucy became the “mother” of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Learn how the Civil War profoundly affected the couple who would go on to become president and first lady of the United States.
- Rutherford B. Hayes during the Civil War
- Introducing Hayes Comes Home – a community initiative
<> Tours of the Meeker Homestead Museum will be available after the program. <>
