Ohio has always been a free state, but that doesn’t mean that the institution of slavery didn’t affect their lives. Many people in Delaware County were active abolitionists who were a part of the Underground Railroad. Learn what it was like to be a part of the Underground Railroad and what life was like back then from reenactors portraying Mrs. Patience Meeker and Mr. William Cratty. You will tour the Meeker property to find out why the Meekers chose to settle on this property and what impact they had on Delaware, all the while trying to figure out where good hiding places would be if you were a runaway. Students will also learn about the different homes in Delaware County that are still standing that were safe houses. They will be able to see them through a slideshow presentation.
Note: This program at The Meeker Homestead is not handicapped accessible in all areas since it is so old, so we have alternate activities for people with disabilities who may not be able to go upstairs in the house or walk around the property outside.
Location:
The Meeker Homestead at 2690 Stratford Rd. just south of downtown Delaware right next to Turkey Hill off of US 23.
Length of time:

The Delaware County Historical Society is a non-profit organization funded by donations and memberships. In order to keep our facilities such as the Nash House, The Meeker Homestead, and the Cryder Research Center open and programs available, we would appreciate any financial contribution your school, PTO or organization can provide.
These fees are negotiable so that all children and interested adult groups can receive the benefit of our programs.
Teacher Resource:
Our teacher packet includes general information about this program, as well as the Ohio standards we cover, the program day’s agenda, follow up questions, worksheets and resource links. This packet was created for teachers to use before their visit, so students have a good baseline of knowledge for our program to build on, as well as follow up activities for after you attend our program.
